Paralyzed & Alarmingly Emaciated - We received a call about a young Opossum who was lying in a yard in the middle of the day, which was already odd because they are nocturnal. The finder approached the possum and it did not try to flee so he picked it up and carried it to the tray he uses to feed feral cats. After the possum immediately started to eat, he then called our rescue and it was discovered that Tesha was partially paralyzed, alarmingly emaciated, and her legs were wounded from prolonged dragging. A veterinary examination revealed Tesha's back had been broken, and she had been suffering this way for a significant period. While euthanasia was the obvious choice, we couldn't bring ourselves to deprive her of the chance to live. She displayed immense resilience in surviving such harsh circumstances, and we believe she deserves a fighting chance at a better life. Despite her back injury making leg movement difficult, Tesha shows promising signs of feeling in her legs. We suspect her injury resulted from a dog attack, as her condition indicated she had been pulling herself around for some time, causing significant muscle atrophy. She is now under our care, receiving pain management medication and antibiotics, as well as treatment for Dermal Sepsis Necrosis, a condition affecting her internal organs, skin, and tissues. With the right support, Tesha can transform from a survivor into an ambassador for her species, showcasing the intelligence and affection of opossums!
Opossums have a very short life span in the wild, maybe 1-2 years...if that. In captivity, with the best of care, they can live to 4-5 years! Releasing Tesha back into the wild is not an option as this would be a death sentence for her so she will live out the rest of her life in a loving home. Here, she will have the run of a loving home providing her with a safe and comfortable environment for a quality life! Your support can help Tesha on her journey from paralysis and suffering to becoming an advocate for opossums. Please consider donating to cover her medical expenses and the ongoing supplies needed to ensure she receives the care and attention she so rightfully deserves. Together, we can offer Tesha a second chance at life, filled with hope, love, and advocacy for her incredible species. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping us save this sweet girl's life!
